Instagram Detox Update

GOOD MORNING!!!

Yes GOOD MORNING in capital letters, cause that's the energy I've been feeling for the last month. 🔋🔋🔋

In a world where screens rule, I did something radical: I ditched Instagram for a month. No deactivation, no half-measures. Just a full delete (Don't worry it was only my personal account). Here's what went down during my digital detox:

I had just finished playing a horrendous round of golf and I was 🤬 with how nothing was going my way, so I took a deep breath and deleted my Instagram account, no turning back. Why Instagram? It was always the first thing I would open on my phone and I was sick of going on it.

Ngl I was missing Instagram my first week, no more memes, no more chatting with friends, and an increasing FOMO on what my friends were up to. Definitely not enjoyable.❌

By the second week, I noticed a shift. Instead of reaching for Instagram when I was bored, I tackled my to-do list, looked at my swing videos, and even embraced being bored(You are extremely creative when bored). It was a subtle but significant change that kept me going.

Everything got harder once I got back to St Andrews, EVERYONE was talking about who posted what, and every time I would meet someone new I would get the up and down look followed by a "who doesn't have Instagram" 🤨

One week later I realized... I don't care what's going on in Habsulla's life! What I actually care about is my friends and family and a real friend shouldn't need Instagram to know what's going on in their loved ones lives. Not having Instagram forced me to build real relationships and most importantly maintain the ones I already had.

But how has all of this helped?!

Without Instagram, I suddenly had more time. I read, listened to podcasts, and I had an incredible increase in productivity. It's like Instagram had been "clouding" my brain. For the last two weeks I've been having some crazy productive days, is it thanks to getting rid of Instagram? Not sure but I've convinced myself it is. Am I going to be able to keep up with this rhythm? Not sure but I sure am going to try. I've never worked so hard while having this much energy and being this happy!

Do I think Instagram is pure poison?☠️

Not at all. Although stupid reels were not helping me, Instagram still has A LOT of incredible things. Instagram is THE PLACE to be if you want to grow your brand or business, that said It still has its negatives. For me, my personal account wasn't giving me anything but was taking a lot from me, which is why the best decision was to get rid of it.

But what about my golf account?!! Fernando, how can you write something like this while having your golf account still live?!!! I'll tell you why that account is still live:

  • I never go on reels or Instagram stories (Instagram hasn't been able to create an algorithm to hook me on)

  • I use that account as my professional account. It helps me develop my personal brand and my creative aptitudes while keeping a completely professional approach.

  • I monitor how much time I spend on it and if I ever feel like it becomes a problem I won't hesitate to return to the medieval ages.

So what should you do?

You do you. If you feel like you want to turn your life around or like there is something that isn't going great use Instagram as a turning point. Instagram probably isn't the problem but if you convince yourself it is it might help you take a new direction.

If you feel like Instagram doesn't really make a difference, try quitting for a week, if you miss it try and analyze why that is. If you know Instagram is not negatively affecting you, keep using it! Make the most out of it and enjoy! We all have our weaknesses and Instagram was one of mine.
